A few days ago I asked a number of close women folk to speak up about what their Valentine's Day expectations really were. The wish list covered a wide spectrum of needs and desires. Some requests were specific like expensive tasteful lingerie (oh Chloe), and others intangible and oddly thoughtful, like time alone. And what do I want for Vday..
NutriBullet 600-Watt Classic Bundle and Green Chef Dinner
Do you remember the movie White Palace with Susan Sarandon and James Spader? At the beginning of their courtship, he gave her a dustbuster as a gift. She kicked him out with the dustbuster . The price of readmission into her home and heart was an apology, flowers and candy. It's never a good idea to give or receive what you need on Vday – the exchange is supposed to be rooted in good love intentions and desire. Prezzies for the house and home are only acceptable when domestication is a turn-on. Well pretty much everything from Thrive Market’s shop of upscale, limited edition and healthy cooking and entertaining goodies gets me fired up. My pick – The NutriBullet Classic Bundle. My love for fresh juice and smoothies sometimes does a face off with my dislike for cleaning up all the bits and bobs of the equipment. Makes me feel like I’m working on a factory assembly line. And while I do love to cook, I love others cooking for me almost as much, especially on date night or VDay when I get to be pampered. Hint hint - Green Chef, the very organic, locally sourced (even vegan) and super personalized alternative to the myriad of other food delivery programs. The packaging is eco-friendly and the meals are totally artisan. Love that - well-crafted menus and gorgeous fresh food. Ok, so cooking is involved. Ideally this will be handled by the gift-giver. But, if that’s a fast track to disaster, with this incredible service, between us, I don't mind playing chef. A little conscious role-play can be spicy!
1 Billion Rising
I have had the most massive girl crush on Eve Ensler since I first saw her perform The Vagina Monologues as the one- woman play it was originally written to be. I felt a tiny touch of that greatness when I organized a bilingual VDAY performance in Hiroshima a several years back. 1 Billion Rising, like her other creative social acts toward equality and solidarity, is an invitation to express a love of humanity. For me, Valentine's Day will forever be intertwined with women - women's rights, women's activism, women's solidarity. Who needs chocolate and roses when you have all that? This special day is one in 365. It's a jumping point for a sustainable love. A love of women and self. (Yo!) I want to dance for change and the safety of women and children. And I don't want to dance alone.
