It's a challenge, a joyful and rewarding one, but still nonetheless a challenge to be a mom. And to be a currently single working mom, well, there should be awards given out and red carpets for us to stroll down in our special dressy garments (with deep pockets to discreetly hold lipstick, pacifier and breast milk pads, and iphone to text the babysitter). But let's just take a moment to wax grateful about the little bling-less reasons to take it slow in the morning. To pause instead of rush almost robotically through each day of our personal and family life.
Lingering after the shower, generously applying that special body creme for no special reason or occasion, gingerly dabbing perfume behind your ears and finger fluffing your hair; letting it free from ponies and rigid blowouts. Taking time for yourself may yield a whisper in the ear of devotion when you have done nothing intentionally sexy or romantic, and not just because you are the mother of his children, but just because the thought/feeling crossed his mind/heart and he couldn’t hold it in....
Let's start with say a semi-real breakfast... It’s amazing how a good strong cup of coffee and a homemade nut-raisin cluster with organic Greek yogurt can set the morning straight. It ranks up there with your beloved taking out the garbage without you having to ask 20 times, volunteering to cook the family dinner (or ordering delicious and healthy take-out and setting the table with plates and real flatware) - it sets things straight, allows you to breathe and nourishes from the inside and out.
When you take your time in the morning, your ease is contagious. Your kids greet your caffeinated “wakey wakey” with a smile instead of a moan that resembles something wild caught in a bear trap, and the duck under the covers and the roll away from the morning light always ends in arms stretched out and a droosy, "Mommy". That walk to the school bus or school is filled with giggles and Eye Spys and your kiss on the check is offered with no reluctance - just pure love.
Go slow. Take your time. Enjoy life. Breathe.
