Do you recall the closet hijacking scene in the film “Working Girl”, when a very young and big-haired Joan Cusack held up an even now covetable black beaded cocktail dress and exclaimed in horror, $6,000! And it’s not even leather!”? It was every newbie fashionista’s exact private thought.
Having spent almost all of my adult life vegetarian, I value, appreciate and even admire designer’s eco-chic stance, but when it comes to plopping down close to a grand for vegan booties, even I wonder why it’s not leather. As progressive as our perceptions of sustainable style may have evolved, I still wonder where being eco-sensitive begins and luxurious wellness ends? And how I really feel about this.
The world of green designers is still relatively small. Fortunately, with this niche market becoming more mainstream, room has been carved for smaller design houses to emerge as leaders in sustainable fashion. And who doesn’t care about the environment, is unfazed by global warming or cringes at the thought of innocent furry animals being refashioned into hats, shoes and coats? Solar panels, organic soap and vegetable-fueled cars are great and generally as effective if not more so than their less eco-minded versions. Yet truth be told, luxury, glamour and quality have not been synonymous with sustainable fashion;at least until now. Now add mindfulness and a sense of wellness on top. That's bSaka.
bSaka is a lifestyle brand designed to fusion ancient wisdom with modern lifestyles in an environmentally friendly way. They are soul boosters - meaning, they do that which makes them feel good, what makes them bloom! All of their garments are made from GOTS certified organic fabrics. The name bSaka is inspired by three empowering words: Brightness, Awareness and Kindness. The indie brand, the soulful brainchild of Swedish besties, Matilda, Sandra, Henrik and Kicki is walking their talk - instead of elaborate collections with style-specific looks, bSaka's line consists of a discreet and purposeful collection of two timeless tops. What I love about bSaka (and there are a lot of things I love, so what I love most) is the wearability of their Grace high neck top. If you are a fan of capsule collections - this piece can perform many fashion feats. Like their homes design Swedish counterparts, bSaka takes design, versatility and utility to a new level. All designs and creative ideas come from the bSaka-team in Stockholm and all designs have been tried on a thousand times before the final pattern is made, to make sure that it looks great on every body! How cool is that? bSaka is launching a new item - the Belle Top is something soft and silky and just as soulfully eco-chic as the tee. Belle is a sleeveless top made from 100% organic GOTS-certified silk. Thin straps shaped in a V on the back keeps the top in perfect place. The fit is loose, elegant and chic. It's simply gorgeous.
While many eco designers adhere to principles of fair-trade and ethical practices, organic and recycled materials, bSaka is selected for their design excellence as well as their ethical credentials. bSaka is also a grassroots company. They are an epitome of sustainability and wellness. Instead of shooting for excess of product and brand pomp and circumstance, bSaka is seductively impactful on our wallets, closet, environment and spirit.
Support bSaka's Kickstarter campaign to bring Belle to life. You'll look good and feel good. Hurry, the campaign ends on May 26.
