Meet Me at The Garden
Yesterday, we met up at the garden.
Not for a volunteer day. Not for a workshop. Nobody needed to accomplish anything.
We just met there.
The same way you might text someone and say, Want to grab coffee?
We talked about hiking and travel, how we somehow survived COVID, and eventually wandered over to see what was ready to harvest.
Ms. Cynthia stopped by and told us about island tomato sauce made without the usual added acid—easier on the stomach, she explained, especially for some of the older folks.
Connie knows she can snip basil and rosemary on her way home from walking the dog. Pizza toppings.
PHS is repairing the broken fence. Sanitation has been showing up. And neighbors seem to have noticed that something good is growing here. Somehow, the planets have aligned and we're seeing less litter and illegal dumping around the garden.
Somewhere along the way, I went home with eggplant.
But what struck me most was much simpler:
We made plans to meet at the garden.
No program required.

The Italian eggplant feels like it wants tomatoes, garlic and olive oil. Maybe roasted and spooned over ricotta toast. Maybe tossed with pasta. Maybe eaten directly from the pan while I'm supposedly deciding.
This is one of my favorite parts of growing food.
Eventually the garden has to meet the kitchen.
And dinner.
